The Domain Resolver Tool is a Tool that you can access from the Manage Hosting page. The tool will show all the domains that you have assigned packages to in your account and provide information as to where the DNS is resolving to.

To locate the Domain Resolver Tool, you can go to Manage Hosting > Tools > Domain Resolver.

For each domain that you have assigned to a package, the Domain Resolver tool will provide information regarding the domain's current Nameservers, Web (DNS A) Records, FTP Records and finally the Mail Records. The Mail Records include IMAP, POP3, SMTP, Mail and MX DNS Records on the domain. If the domain is pointing to ourselves, it will show a green tick next to each of the records.

If the domain is either not pointing to ourselves, or instead, there are no DNS Records being set, then it will show as a Red cross.

Where this is the case, it will provide the values that we expect to be set, for example, if no A Record is being set, it will provide you with the IP of the package that is the expected DNS A Record.

Domain Resolver Tool Use Cases

There is a handful of use cases where the Domain Resolver Tool can provide invaluable information for troubleshooting.

  • NXDOMAIN - If you are seeing a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error when trying to access your website, it suggests there is an issue resolving your domain name to a service. The NXDOMAIN section specifically refers to the domain being 'non-existent'. Using the Domain Resolver will allow you to directly see whether your domains are being pointed to the correct IP Address and A Record.
  • Email Issues - If you are experiencing issues with your 20i-hosted mailbox, such as issues receiving, or issues connecting it to another mail client, such as Outlook, Thunderbird or Gmail, then there may be issues with your Mail Records in your DNS. You can use the domain resolver tool to ensure that all the necessary mail DNS Records are present on your domain.
  • Unresponsive domain - if you are seeing both the above errors, and the other records or services on the domain are completely unresponsive, it could be that the nameservers are set incorrectly. This tool will display the current nameservers on the domain. Whether you are using third-party nameservers or our StackDNS ones, you can use this tool to verify that the nameservers are showing correctly.
