What is a nameserver?
A name server is a critical part of the DNS (Domain Name System). In simple terms, DNS is responsible for answering queries asked about domain names.
An authoritative name server is where the DNS records are stored for your domain name.
Whenever you type a domain name into a web browser, it is the nameservers that are used to find the IP address and help make your connection to the site.
Role of nameservers
A nameserver helps translate domain names into IP addresses. This is necessary because while humans can easily remember and understand domain names (such as www.20i.com), computers and other devices access websites using IP addresses (such as 185.151.30.20).
Types of nameservers
There are two types of nameservers: authoritative and recursive.
- Authoritative nameservers are responsible for storing information about a specific zone, such as its IP address and any subdomains. They will only answer for domain names that they have zones for.
- Recursive nameservers do not store information about domains, but instead forward requests for domain information to other nameservers until the correct IP address is found.
As an end user you don’t usually have to worry about recursive nameservers: You'll either be using recursive nameservers provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or a public DNS service such as Google’s Public DNS or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1
How nameservers translate domain names into IP addresses
When a user types a domain name into their browser, your device will send a DNS query to resolve the domain name to its corresponding IP address.
Your computer will speak to your recursive/local nameserver mentioned earlier, which in turn will query the domains authoritative nameserver for the record.
The authoritative nameserver then looks up the IP address in its database and returns it to the resolver, which is given to your device. The browser can then use that IP address to access the domain and render the webspace.
Example for nameservers
When you visit 20i.com in your browser, your device will send a query for 20i.com to your recursive nameserver. Your recursive nameserver firsts asks the root nameservers and .COM nameservers for the nameservers that are responsible for 20i.
Our nameservers are ns1.stackdns.com, ns2.stackdns.com, ns3.stackdns.com and ns4.stackdns.com.
The recursive nameserver will then ask one of the 4 stackdns.com nameservers for the DNS records 20i.com resolves to.
Our nameservers reply with an A record and an IP address like 185.151.30.20. Your browser then makes a connection to this IP address which will get to the web server hosting the website, and you get the rendered page in your web browser.
The importance of nameservers in the internet infrastructure
In summary, nameservers are an essential part of the internet infrastructure, allowing users to access websites using easy-to-remember domain names, instead of having to remember complex IP addresses.
How do I take my temporary test site / StackStaging site live?
There are two possible variations on how to approach this, dependent on whether the site in development is hosted elsewhere or whether you're creating a WordPress site on 20i:
Developing your site at 20i but it is hosted elsewhere:
You may be using the temporary URL within StackCP whilst you develop your site. To take the site live you'll need to do either of the following:
1. You can either point the domain to our nameservers which are:
ns1.stackdns.com
ns2.stackdns.com
ns3.stackdns.com
ns4.stackdns.com
2. Point the domain to the A Record that is located within StackCP > Manage DNS.
WordPress Sites:
If you are using the temporary URL within StackCP and you have a WordPress site, you may need to do either, or both of the following:
Update the temporary URL within WordPress Admin:
- Log in to the WordPress admin.
- Click on Settings on the left hand side.
- Change the WordPress Address (URL) to your actual domain name.
- Change the Site Address (URL) to your actual domain name.
- Update the database.
- Backup your database and save the copy off-site.
And/or:
- Log in to phpMyAdmin.
- Select the link to your database and choose the one that is your WordPress database.
- All the tables in your database will appear on the screen. You will then see all the tables in your database, locate wp_options and select Browse.
- A screen will open with a list of the fields within the wp_options table. Under the field option_name, locate 'siteurl'.
- Click the Edit Field icon which usually is found at the far left at the beginning of the row.
- The Edit Field window will appear.
- In the input box for option_value, change the URL information to the new site address.
- Verify this is correct and click Go to save the information. You should be returned to your wp_options table.
- Look for the home field in the table and click Edit Field. Note: there are several pages of tables inside wp_options. Look for the > symbol to page through them.
- In the input box for option_value, carefully change the URL information to the new address.
- Verify this is correct and select 'Go' to save the information.
There is further information about this from WordPress.org: Changing the Site URL.

Hyphens are also allowed but must be surrounded by characters, therefore not at the beginning or end of the domain. You're not allowed to use special characters (like '#*%') and spaces cannot be used.
General Rules
- Your domain must be unique, i.e. a domain name that is not already in use. You can check if the name has already been taken through our domain name search.
- .com .net .org and .info domain names cannot exceed 67 characters.
- .info and .biz must have at least 3 characters not including .info and .biz
- Other domain names cannot exceed 22 characters not including the extension.

The Domain Name System Security Extensions(DNSSEC) is a set of extensions by the Internet Engineering Task Force used for securing data in the Domain Name System(DNS. The protocol provides security improvements that aren't present in the default DNS system. The original design of DNS did not include any security features.
How does it apply to 20i?You can use DNSSEC on the 20i platform.
If you wish to enable DNSSEC for a domain, you must go to here > Options > Manage > DNSSEC Protection.

What does FQDN mean?
FQDN stands for Fully Qualified Domain Name.
It refers to a complete domain name consisting of a host and domain name.
The domain name itself is comprised of two parts: the second-level domain and the top-level domain.
So, for the example of www.exampledomain.com, 'www' is the host, 'exampledomain' is the second-level domain and '.com' is the top-level domain.

What are DNS Records? Domain Name System Guide
What is DNS?
DNS means 'Domain Name System'. It sounds very technical, but it’s actually quite simple. It’s a way for your browser (eg Firefox or Chrome) or mail client (eg Outlook or Mac Mail) to find websites and services on the internet.
Computers love numbers, but humans like names. It’s far easier for you to keep someone in your iPhone’s phonebook as John Doe rather than his number 07999333456. DNS is just the Internet’s version of this.
You’ve probably heard of IP addresses, they’re those things you occasionally see that look like 192.168.100.2 or 4.4.4.4. They're the 'phone numbers' of the internet, and you’ve definitely seen a website or an email address: www.google.com or john.doe@hotmail.com. DNS is the 'phonebook' of the internet, matching up website and email domain names to the actual IP addresses of the servers on the Internet.

What DNS records can I manage in 20i?
If you register (or transfer) your domain names with 20i, we’ll take care of all the DNS you need for your website and email. If for any reason you need to get your 'hands dirty' and add, modify or remove any DNS records, you can do also this with the 20i control panel.
There are many types of DNS records that exist, but not all are relevant to hosting. What follows is an explanation of each record type you can manage for your 20i domains.
'A' records
A records allow a DNS name (e.g., www.20i.com) to be pointed to one or more IPv4 addresses (quad - AAAA - records are used for pointing a DNS name to IPv6 addresses). These are the most common kinds of records you’ll see. The DNS name “www.20i.com” is an A record and it points to 185.151.28.20 which is an IPv4 address. Google has “www.google.com” which is both an A and AAAA record which point to “216.58.210.36” (IPv4) and “2a00:1450:4009:800::2004” (IPv6) respectively.
'CNAME' records
This stands for “canonical name” and you can only have one of these per name in a DNS zone (DNS zone basically means the domain name).
A CNAME record doesn’t point to an IP address but points to another DNS name. It’s a handy way of pointing multiple names to one place, and then only managing one set of IP addresses.
One example of a CNAME is 'webbuilder.stackcp.com' pointing to 'builder.stackcp.com' which is an A record pointing to “185.151.28.40”. So this means that you can change the IPv4 address of just 'builder' and you’ve effectively changed the address for 'webbuilder' too - very handy!
Note: You can't add a CNAME for the root domain. A CNAME can only be added for a subdomain such as 'subdomain.example.com' but not for 'example.com'.
'MX' records
MX stands for 'mail exchanger'. It tells a 'sending' mail server how to find the 'receiving' mail server, given in order of priority, with the lowest numbers given highest priority. The MX record for 20i.com is 'mx.stackmail.com'.
'TXT' records
TXT (or text) records are not generally used to locate servers on the internet, but to prove to external systems that the domain is yours, or, that mail from certain hosts can originate from that domain (they’re called SPF records). It’s very unlikely that you’ll need to ever manually create a TXT record, but we offer the flexibility just in case.
'SRV' records
SRV (or service) records are similar to A (and CNAME and MX) records in that they are used to look up the IP addresses of servers on the Internet, but also include port and protocol information. It’s very unlikely you’ll ever need to modify these for your 20i hosting, but we provide the facility in case you may want to operate your own offsite services under your 20i-hosted domains.

Here’s how to transfer your domain name from 123-reg to 20i and start saving on renewal prices.

How to change your WordPress URL
Rebrands and name changes take place from time to time, so you might need to update the WordPress URL that your site uses. Or, you may have finally finished creating your site on a development domain or subdomain and be ready to bring your site live, but you’re unsure how to go about doing so.
Due to the nature of WordPress databases, updating every single internal reference from your old domain to your new one can be time-consuming and difficult. WordPress sites use the URL of the main site for a lot of different internal processes, so it’s important to know how to update this properly to minimise disruption.
Note: Before attempting an update of your WordPress site’s URL, take a backup of the database to ensure you have a restore point. Our Timeline Backups service - which is included free with all WordPress Hosting - can be used for this.
Updating the WordPress URL within the Control Panel
Our WordPress Hosting platform includes inbuilt tools to update the site’s core settings in the form of the Settings area.
To access this:
- Log into My20i and head to your Manage Hosting area
- Select Options > Manage on the hosting package you’d wish to edit
- Under the WordPress Tools section of your package and select the Settings button
Here, you’ll see areas where you can set the Site URL and Home of your WordPress site. Update these fields to the new URL, and hit Save Settings.
Change the WordPress URL in the WordPress Dashboard
In order to change the WordPress URL from within the dashboard, head to the site’s wp-admin area and edit these details in Settings > General:
Then hit Save Changes.
Note: Changing the site’s URL while logged into wp-admin will require you to log back in again on the new site URL.
Change the WordPress URL in the Database
Note: If you’re unfamiliar with phpMyAdmin, take a backup of your site’s database before following the steps below so that you have a restore point available, just in case.
- Log into My20i and head to your Manage Hosting area.
- Select Options > Manage on the hosting package you’d wish to edit.
- Head to the Web Tools section and select phpMyAdmin
- Select Sign In on your MySQL database. If you’re unsure which database is for your site, check your wp-config.php file.
- You’ll be signed into phpMyAdmin. Select your database on the left, then the _options table from the list
- You'll see entries for ‘siteurl’ and ‘home’. Edit the values of these entries and your site’s URL will be updated.
Change the WordPress URL in the wp-config.php
For this step, navigate to your File Manager or FTP client and locate the wp-config.php file within your WordPress installation directory. For WordPress hosting packages, the file location will be public_html/wp-config.php.
The following definitions can be added within the wp-config.php file, with your URL set.
define( 'WP_HOME', 'http://20i-example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'http://20i-example.com' );
Change the WordPress URL with WP-CLI
For this fourth step, you will require SSH access to utilise WP-CLI (this is available to all 20i customers). Once you have connected to the hosting package via SSH, change directory to your WordPress installation – this is public_html for WordPress hosting packages. You will then need to run the following two commandsL
wp option update home 'http://20i-example.com'
wp option update siteurl 'http://20i-example.com'
Search and Replace with a plugin
Occasionally there may be other instances of the old URL being set within the database after a URL chance. Editing the database of your site manually can be risky if you’re unfamiliar with the process.
Alternatively, you can use a third-party plugin to do it for you.
We recommend Better Search Replace. This plugin provides an easy to understand UI in your wp-admin area where you can search for certain entries in your site’s database and update them. This includes searching for your current site URL and updating it.
To do this:
- Log into your wp-admin area of your site, and search for the Better Search Replace plugin in your site’s Plugins > Add New area
- Select Install and Activate
- Better Search Replace will now appear as an option under Tools. Select it from the dropdown menu, and you’ll be presented with a form like below:
- Enter your current URL in Search for and the URL you’re updating to in Replace with. You’ll see further down a selection of checkboxes:
- Use Run as dry run if you want to see what tables the search and replace will update without actually changing anything, and hit Run Search/Replace
- Once you’re happy with what changes will be made, uncheck the Run as dry run option and run the search and replace again
This will update all of your site’s URLs in the database for you.
Updating your site’s URL on WordPress can be handled with multiple different tools and approaches depending on where and how your site is hosted. Always make sure to take backups before making any major changes like this, to ensure that you have a restore point.
FAQs
Do I need to add a redirect to allow my WordPress site to load the new URL?
WordPress should automatically redirect any attempts to connect to your old URL to the new domain you’ve added, so a redirect shouldn’t be required.
I finished updating all of my site’s URLs but the old site still shows, what’s going on?
It’s likely due to one of three reasons. Either the old URL still exists inside the domain in some form, a redirect exists on the domain that is correcting to the old URL or the old URL is caching.
Check your database and .htaccess for any references to the old URL, and run a full purge of the Edge Cache.

What is your Nominet Tag (IPS Tag)?
What is an IPS tag?
The IPS tag is required on all .UK domain names by Nominet, the .UK domain name governing body. It’s used to identify the registrar associated with a specific .UK domain name. Every UK registrar has it’s own unique IPS tag.
How can I check the IPS tag on my domain?
To find out which IPS tag your domain currently has set, you’d need to perform a WHOIS lookup on the domain name. A WHOIS will return the registrar information, along with the domain name’s registration and expiry date, nameserver information and it’s registration status.
An example WHOIS lookup is shown below – in this case, the Registrar is 20i Ltd and uses our IPS tag ‘STACK’:
Domain name: example.co.uk Data validation: Nominet was able to match the registrant's name and address against a 3rd party data source on 31-Jul-2018 Registrar: 20i Ltd [Tag = STACK] URL: http://www.20i.com Relevant dates: Registered on: 01-Jan-2017 Expiry date: 01-Jan-2027 Last updated: 03-Jan-2023 Registration status: Registered until expiry date. Name servers: ns1.stackdns.com ns2.stackdns.com ns3.stackdns.com ns4.stackdns.com DNSSEC: Signed WHOIS lookup made at 10:08:32 06-Jan-2023 -- This WHOIS information is provided for free by Nominet UK the central registry for .uk domain names. This information and the .uk WHOIS are: Copyright Nominet UK 1996 - 2023.
How do I transfer a domain name to 20i using the IPS tag?
To transfer domain names ending with .uk, you'll first need to contact your current provider and request they change the tag to STACK. Once the tag change has been completed you'll be able to complete the transfer over to us.
If you're having any problems with changing your tag we recommend contacting Nominet.
For more information on how to transfer a domain to 20i please see here: https://www.20i.com/support/domain-names/transfer-domain-20i
How do I change the IPS tag on a domain name registered with 20i?

To do this, you’ll need to:
- Log in to your My20i account and go to Manage Domains
- Select Options and then go to Manage
- Select Transfer Away
- Enter the new IPS tag and press Submit

What is DNS Propagation?
When you make a change to your DNS records or update your domain(s) nameservers, you need to wait a certain amount of time before these changes are fully reflected across the internet.
This is because DNS records are cached by what's known as a DNS resolver. The job of a resolver is to help speed up browsing and reduce overall traffic by reducing the number of DNS lookups that are made to translate domain names to IP addresses. The time it takes for a resolver's cache to expire and a new lookup to be made is called DNS propagation.
The maximum amount of time a resolver will cache a lookup for is known as the record's 'Time to Live' (TTL) value. There are two key cases to remember when it comes to propagation and TTL values:
1. Changes to DNS Records
If you're not changing your domain(s) nameservers but just updating records on existing nameservers, the time taken for propagation should be relatively quick. This is because the TTL for the records is being controlled by the operator of the nameserver, and it's very rare you will see a provider offering TTLs of more than 4 hours. The TTL given out by our nameservers is 3600 seconds (1 hour). So if you're making a change to your records on our nameservers it won't take long to propagate.
2. Changes to your Domain(s) Nameservers
Nameserver changes are the slowest propagating, and can take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide. This is because nameservers' records are retrieved from the root nameservers, which most commonly give out a large TTL value of 2 days (172800 seconds) - or more - causing DNS resolvers to cache these lookups for a long time.
Can I speed this up?
Firstly, it's good to remember that it's very rare that the resolvers you're using have just cached the record you are requesting, so in very few cases will you need to wait the full time specified by the records TTL.
The DNS resolvers most likely impacting you are those operated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Although rare, some ISPs ignore TTL settings, and will only update their cached records every one or two days. There's a chance a simple reboot of your Internet Router will get you another set of DNS resolvers that are yet to cache your records upon reconnection. If you're regularly waiting for DNS propagation and believe your ISP is not obeying TTL values from nameservers you may wish to consider switching to Google Public DNS . This is a free, global DNS resolution service that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.
What about the WHOIS?
Checking the WHOIS record for your domain name is a good way of confirming that your nameserver change has completed successfully at the registry. However, WHOIS records are not directly related to DNS propagation. At most, a change in the WHOIS record confirms the root nameservers should now answer with your new nameservers. The TTL value is still in effect and DNS resolvers around the world may only ask the root nameservers for any updates once the original TTL has expired.

My www.domain.com doesn't work, but domain.com works fine (or vice-versa) - what's up?
If you get this behaviour after a recent update to your website or a newly-created package, you're almost certainly experiencing a DNS propagation delay.
It will resolve itself in a matter of hours.
The assumption is that when you previously visited your website you visited using www.domain.com and not domain.com (without the www). Thus, your DNS resolvers have the lookup of www.domain.com stored in their cache. When you try to view www.domain.com again, you get your DNS resolvers' cached value which is the old IP address. However, when you checked the domain with just "domain.com" (no www) your DNS resolvers didn't have an answer in their cache so fetched the new (correct) IP address for the domain. Hence "domain.com" works for you but "www.domain.com" doesn't.
The only solution here is to wait for the cache to expire on your resolver, and then when you visit the domain again a fresh lookup with be made and the new IP will be stored.
If you're using the StackDNS nameservers, this should take no longer than 1 hour. If you've recently changed your nameservers, or would like to read more about DNS propagation, please see What is DNS Propagation?
How do I setup a domain redirect?
You can setup a domain redirect in a couple of ways. We’ll outline these below:
Using the control panel Redirects tool
- Login to My20i and head to either Manage Hosting (or Manage Domains) and select to Manage the site you wish to add the redirect for.
- Select the Redirects icon, under Web Tools.
- Add the domain you would like to be redirected and then the destination address.
- In general, you’d want to use the 301 Permanent Redirect, but if you are planning on only temporarily redirecting the site then you can use a 302 Temporary Redirect.
The difference between the two types of redirects is down to how search engines handle them.
Search engines use the redirect type as a way to figure out if the old site needs to be kept indexed.
Essentially if you want the new site to be a replacement for the old site, you should use a 301 Permanent Redirect, if you're developing a new website and your current website may be down for a short time, you may want to use a 302 Temporary Redirect.
Using .htaccess
A .htaccess file is an important Apache configuration file usually resides within the public_html folder of your site, it’s a way to add specific rules on a per-hostname basis. A .htaccess rule allows for further configuration of your redirect should you need a more specific redirect. Below are some common examples you may need to add.
Redirect your website to a new domain
To redirect your website to another domain using a .htaccess rule you’d want to add the following rule to your .htaccess file and then save the file:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^oldsite.com [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.oldsite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://newsite.com/$1 [L,R=301,NC]
Force www. instead of non-www.
You could achieve this by editing the site and home URL (if your site is WordPress), but it can also be achieved by using the following rule:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mywebsite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mywebsite.com/$1 [L,R=301,NC]
Force HTTPS
You can use the Force HTTPS tool from within the control panel to always enable https://, however you can also add the following rule:
RewriteCond %{env:HTTPS} =off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

How can I use DNS to verify my domain with Google Search Console (Webmaster Tools)?
When setting up Google Search Console you will be asked to verify your domain. A recommended method which will work as long as you are using our StackDNS nameservers is to add the Google verification code as a TXT record for your domain.
To do this, go to the "Manage DNS" section of your control panel. Towards the bottom of the Manage DNS page, you will see 3 inputs to allow you to add new records:
- Leave the "Name" field blank
- Select "TXT" for Type
- You should now enter the record given by Google in the "Data" input.
Save your changes and head back to Google to run the verification. DNS updates across our nameservers are usually done instantly, but in rare cases can take up to 2 minutes.
Domain transfer statuses explained?
After submitting a domain name for transfer, you can keep track of its status from the Pending Domain Transfer page.
Over the course of a transfer you may see a couple of different statuses:
Pending Owner Approval – In the case where an authorisation code (EPP) hasn’t been submitted with the transfer of the domain, the Registry will send an approval email to the administration email address listed in the contact details for the domain. If you locate the email and follow the instructions, the transfer can move to the next stage in the process.
Pending Registry Approval – Once the domain transfer has been verified either by an authorisation code (EPP) or approval email then we must wait for final confirmation from the previous registrar before the transfer completes. There isn’t anything you need to do, and the transfer will complete usually within 5-7 days.
Transfer in Progress - This status indicates that all required approvals have been received, and the domain transfer is being processed. It could take a few days to complete depending on the registrars involved.
Transfer Completed - The domain has successfully been transferred to the new registrar. At this point, the new registrar has control over the domain, and the former registrar no longer has any access to or control over the domain.
When a transfer completes it’ll be removed from the Pending Domain Transfer page and you’ll be able to manage the domain from the Manage Domains page.
Transfer Failed - This status indicates that there was an issue with the transfer, and it didn't go through. The reasons could be various, like inadequate domain preparation, incorrect authorization code, or rejection by the losing registrar.

How do I add a DKIM record?
DKIM, like SPF, is a standard that enables a specific aspect of the email sending process to be authenticated.
The premise of DKIM is to check that an email is really from the domain or sender that it said it was sent from and if it has been altered in any way in transit.
As a hosting reseller your customers might ask you to add DKIM records for them, so it is import to understand them and know how to add them.
Specifically, DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), provides a foundation for distinguishing legitimate mail. A DKIM signature is placed in the header of emails sent by 20i’s mail servers, so that the receiving mail server can then validate the signature using a public cryptographic key (2048 bit). It's added as a TXT record in the Manage DNS section for the domain name.
DKIM does not outright mean all emails will be delivered. However, it does provide the receiving mail server with further information so it can make a more informed decision on the best way to handle the email.
If you'd like to read more about DKIM, we'd recommend this blog post: DKIM Demystified.
How to add a DKIM record at 20i
- Head to Manage Hosting and 'Manage' the package you want to add a DKIM record.
- Select the DomainKeys icon.
Firstly, we'll explain how to add a simple DKIM record to your DNS.
- Ensure you’ve selected the domain you want to add the DKIM record-to.
- Add a Selector. This can be any value or name you like. It’s simply a field to identify the DKIM record. Then select Add Signature.
- If your nameservers are with 20i, we’ll automatically add the correct TXT record for you.
The signature will be added immediately to emails sent from the mailboxes under the domain selected. We will have automatically added a DNS record to Manage DNS. You may wish to wait for this to resolve for DKIM to be effective.
From here you’re all done: your emails will use DKIM as a method to authenticate email.
You can also use the Advanced Options section.
ℹ️ Note: This is only recommended if you’re familiar with customising DKIM signatures. Below is a description of each section and how it alters the DKIM signature that’s added to the header of emails sent.
Selector – This is a unique identifier for the DKIM record and can be set to any value you like. For example you could set it to indicate the name of an office location or the signing date (e.g. “october2019”).
Granularity/Identity – By default this is set to a wildcard value: '*'. You can use this field to set the DKIM record to be assigned to a specific mailbox, allowing you to constrain which mailbox can use this selector legitimately. For example, if you set the value of this field to be ‘sales’, only your sales@domain.com mailbox will use this DKIM signature. This field must match the local part of the signing address (mailbox).
Note – This field does not form part of the DKIM record or signature and is simply there so you can record any information about this record for your own information.
Service Type – Currently, DKIM only supports signatures added to messages sent via ‘Email’ (i.e. SMTP). However, in the future the DKIM standard may add more service types such as IM or VoIP, which we’ll then be able to support. This field can be left to either ‘*’ or ‘Email’ - changing this won’t influence behaviour at present.
Canonicalization – Some mail servers and relay systems may modify an email in transit, potentially invalidating a DKIM signature. There are two options you can set: 'Simple' and 'Relaxed'. If you expect your email to be modified in any way, you should select Relaxed which is more forgiving to changes made the header and body of the email.
Expiry Time – This is the time which, when elapsed, the DKIM signature will be invalidated in the mail header. By default it’s set to 86400 seconds (1 day). You may wish to extend this if you believe deliverability of the email will take longer than 1 day.
Flags - There are two flags available: 'Production' and 'Testing'. If you select Testing, you'll still receive a response to the email and the DKIM signature from the remote mail server, but the email won't be treated with different behaviour. Verifier systems may wish to track testing mode results to assist the signer. You'll mostly want to use Production.

How to configure DNS settings for G Suite and Gmail
Our control panel allows automatic configuration of DNS Records. You can configure your domain name for G Suite (Google Apps) in My20i or StackCP.
- First, select 'Manage hosting', and select Manage on the hosting package you wish to add G Suite DNS records-to.
- Select the Manage DNS icon
- In the dropdown beneath Preconfigured Settings, you'll see two available options: G Suite (E-mail only) and G Suite (All services). The configuration you should use depends on the services you want from Google. If you're using Google just for mail under your own domain name (MX records) use the G Suite (E-mail only) link. For all the other G Suite applications, including records for Docs, Chat, Calendar, and services like Hangouts, use the G Suite (All services) option.
The control panel will show you the records that will be automatically added as a result of this change, allowing you to save them.
Please bear in mind that DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to fully propagate worldwide.

Domain Contact Validation
Sometimes the Domain Registry requires the person registering the domain - the Registrant - to verify the contact details of their domain.
What is the verification process?
The verification process is a 15-day window during which a Registrant must provide a response to the verification email sent by the Registry. The email contains a link to a page displaying the Registrant contact details and the option to Verify Information.
What if domain contact validation is not completed?
Failure to respond to the Registry email will result in the suspension of the domain. This will lead to the website and the email service for the domain stopping.
How to I resend a verification email?
- Head to My20i > Domain Contact Validation
- Select Resend Verification Email
What information is being verified?
The Registry is verifying the First name, Last name and Email of the Registrant. If a domain is bought, transferred or updated, the Registry checks against the existing records to check if the new contact information needs to be verified.
What change will trigger the verification process for an existing domain?
Any change to the registrant contact information will trigger the verification process. An email will automatically be sent requesting verification of the newly updated details.

Why does my UK tag change show as complete but the domain is not in my account?
A UK domain transfer is a 2 stage process. You need to:
- Change the tag to STACK
- Transfer this in through the 20i control panel
When submitting a tag change, tag changes work on a handshake system, therefore the new tag provider needs to accept the request to update the tag, this can sometimes lead to a slight delay to the tag updating.
The best way to check the current tag for a domain name is the Nominet WHOIS system. Once you've confirmed this is using STACK, complete the transfer by:
- Login to your My20i account and click Transfer a Domain
- Enter the domain name and click Search.
- Add the domain to your basket and complete checkout.
The transfer will complete almost instantly.
What happens to DNS when you assign a domain to a hosting package?
By default, when a standalone domain is added to a hosting package we reset the DNS records to the default 20i records.
This is to ensure normal services can function, including emails and the website itself.
In the event you have a standalone domain that has custom DNS that you wish to add to a hosting package, you'll need to be aware that the DNS will be reset when doing so to make way for the default DNS.
If you want to maintain the custom DNS you'll need to ensure it's added once the domain is assigned to the web hosting package, so that those services continue to run as normal.

Why does my UK domain show up within WHOIS as 'renewal in progress'?
Your domain status will be referred to as 'renewal in progress' during the period when Nominet (the top-level registrar for domains within the UK) is processing your order.
WHOIS may take a couple of days to update this and will happen automatically.
You'll still have access to your site even when this message is displayed.
How can I create a subdomain?
To create a subdomain:
- Log in to My20i
- Head to Manage Hosting -> Manage.
- Select the Subdomains icon.
You can then add your subdomain into the Subdomain field and select Create Subdomain. You're also able to change the Document Root so that you can direct the subdomain to the folder of your choosing.
What is the document root?
The document root is the folder which the subdirectory will use, for example, you may have a directory within your web space located within public_html called support (i.e. public_html/support), you could point your subdomain to this location by adding public_html/support in the Document Root field.

Brexit Transition Notice
Please see the EURid Brexit notice for the latest information: https://eurid.eu/en/register-a-eu-domain/brexit-notice/
New Registrations
As from 1 January 2021, 00:00:00 CET, EURid will NOT allow the registration of any new domain name by UK registrants.
From that date, EURid will allow neither the transfer, nor the transfer through update, of any domain name to a UK registrant.
Existing Registrations
On 1 October 2020, EURid has notified by email all UK registrants and their registrars that they will lose their eligibility as of 1 January 2021 unless they demonstrate their compliance with the .eu regulatory framework by updating their registration data before 31 December 2020. They could do so by indicating a legally established entity in one of the eligible Union Member States, or updating their residence to a Union Member State, or proving their citizenship of a Union Member State irrespective of their residence.
On 21 December 2020, EURid will notify by email all UK registrants who did not demonstrate continued compliance with the eligibility criteria and their registrars about the risk of forthcoming non-compliance with the .eu regulatory framework.
On 1 January 2021, as of 00:00:00 CET, EURid notified by email all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain name was no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and therefore, it would be moved to the so-called “SUSPENDED” status until 31 March 2021 (now extended to 30 June 2021). A domain name in the “SUSPENDED” status can no longer support any service (such as website and email), but may still be reinstated if registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria.
On 1 April 2021, 00:00:00 CET, EURid will once again notify by email all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and consequently is moved to the so-called “WITHDRAWN” status. A domain name in the “WITHDRAWN” status is not in the zone file and cannot support any service.
On 1 January 2022, as of 00:00:00 CET, all the domain names in the “WITHDRAWN” status, formerly assigned to UK registrants, will be REVOKED and subsequently, become AVAILABLE for general registration. Their release will occur in batches for security reasons.
PLEASE NOTE:
European Union citizens who are residing in the United Kingdom will remain eligible to hold a .eu domain name after the end of the transition period* provided they update their registration data with their EU citizenship. Please consult the FAQ: How can I update my registration based on my citizenship?
United Kingdom citizens residing in a European Union Member State will continue to be eligible to hold a .eu domain name after the transition period based on their residence. However, United Kingdom citizens residing outside of the Union Member States, will no longer be eligible to hold a .eu domain name after the end of the transition period.
*Should the transition period be extended for up to 1 or 2 years in accordance with Article 132 of the Withdrawal Agreement, the specific dates of present plan should be adapted accordingly.
'Domain not registered' warning notice within the control panel
You may occasionally see a warning notice within the control panel of a hosting package stating, ‘domain not registered’.
Although this may sound alarm bells, it doesn’t always mean the domain is not registered.
If you have created a hosting package using a domain reference, and the domain name is not registered, this acts as a polite reminder that the live domain will not be accessible via the web but will remain accessible via the hosting package's temporary URL.
You can confirm whether the domain name has been registered using a Whois lookup tool.
If the domain name has been registered, there are a few more things to check:
- If the domain name is using third party nameservers this will result in the warning notice being prompted within the control panel.
- If DNSSEC is enabled on the domain name, this prevents the platform from running a DNS check on the domain name, which will result in the warning notice prompt. This can also be checked by using a Whois lookup and you should see something like this: DNSSEC: Signed. This can be disabled from the domain registrar, whether that be 20i or another domain provider.
- If the domain status is set to: ‘Domain Status: clientHold https://icann.org/epp#clientHold’ - this means that the domain registry has deactivated the domain’s DNS. This can also be detected by running a Whois lookup. If this is present, you should contact your domain provider.
How to use the DMARC Wizard tool to add DMARC DNS records
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is a way to stop or reduce email spam and phishing attacks. It is based on existing email authentication methods using SPF (Sender Policy Framework) or DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)
To use the DMARC Wizard tool, you need to have a domain name and an email service that supports DMARC. You can use the tool to create a DMARC policy for your domain and add it to your DNS records.
Here are the steps to use the DMARC Wizard tool:
- Log in to your My20i account and go to Manage Hosting > Options > Manage.
- Click on DMARC Wizard under Email.
- Choose your domain name in the Domain field.
- Choose the requested policy type from the drop-down menu. The recommended option is None if you are unsure. This means that you only want to monitor the DMARC reports and not take any action on the emails that fail the DMARC check.
- Optionally, you can click on Advanced Options to customize your DMARC policy further. You can specify the DKIM identifier, the SPF identifier, the policy percentage, and the action to take on emails that fail the DMARC check.
- Click on Add DMARC to generate the DMARC record for your domain.
- We'll add the DNS record automatically for you, it's added as a TXT record with
_dmarc
as the host name.
You have successfully added a DMARC record for your domain using the DMARC Wizard tool. You can now monitor the DMARC reports and adjust your policy as needed. For more information on DMARC, please visit https://dmarc.org/.
How to point your 20i domain to Shopify
Shopify is an online e-commerce solution that allows for you to design and create an online store. When you create a store using their tools, it’s accessible by default using their own Shopify domain. As an example, if you made a store called MyBrand, the shop would be under the domain mybrand.myshopify.com.
However, some users wish to have their Shopify store under their own domain name or subdomain for branding purposes – Shopify allow you to set this up using A and CNAME DNS records, and then add your domain to your Shopify account. To do this:
- Login to My20i
- Locate the package or domain you wish to use as your Shopify domain
- Select Manage DNS
- Add the necessary DNS to your DNS area using the text fields and drop-down boxes present. Shopify recommend the necessary DNS changes:
- An A record pointing to the IP 23.227.38.65
- A CNAME record for www. Pointing to shops.myshopify.com.
Once these values have been added, head over to the Shopify admin area, and do the following:
- Go to Settings → Domains
- Select Connect existing domain
- Enter your domain into the Domain field
- Select Connect domain
Shopify will then verify and list your domain in the Domains section with a status indicating that it is connected and available to be used.
What is the domain life cycle for .UK domains?
The domain lifecycle for .uk domains (including .co.uk, .org.uk, and more) which are managed by Nominet, differs slightly from generic TLDs (gTLDs). Here is an outline of the .uk domain name lifecycle:
Registration
Any available .uk domain can be registered through a registrar authorized by Nominet - such as 20i. Registration periods can vary, with the minimum period being one year.
Active
Once registered, the domain is active and can be used for a website, email, etc. The registrant can manage the domain via their chosen registrar.
Renewal
The domain can be renewed at any time before its expiration. 20i will send out reminder emails as the expiration date approaches.
Expiration
When a .uk domain expires, it is not immediately dropped or deleted. Instead, it enters a grace period.
Grace Period (Renewal Period)
30-day Grace Period: After a .uk domain expires, the registrant has 30 days to renew the domain at the standard renewal rate. During this time, the domain is suspended but can still be reinstated by the original registrant without additional fees.
Redemption Period
60-day Redemption Period: Unlike many gTLDs, .uk domains do not have a separate redemption period after the grace period. If the domain is not renewed within the 30-day grace period, it is scheduled for deletion for 60 days. During this period, it is still possible to renew the domain as normal.
Pending Deletion
Once both the Grace and Redemption periods have passed, which will be 90 days past the expiry date, and the domain has not been renewed it will enter the Pending Delete period. This will last for 5 days and it is no longer possible to renew the domain.
Release
After the pending deletion phase, the domain becomes available for registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
Throughout this lifecycle, it's essential for the registrant to keep their contact information up to date with their registrar, as Nominet and other registrars use this information to send important notifications regarding domain status and renewals.
How can I consolidate domain renewals?
The Domain Renewal Consolidation feature allows you to set a preferred renewal date for your domains to renew on. This makes it so that all your domain renewals due within one month after the chosen date will renew at the same time and show on the same invoice.
To find this option, you'll need to go to the Account Preferences page, which you can find by hovering over the account name in the top-right corner of My20i.
Once on the Account Preferences page, you'll need to scroll to the bottom to see the Domain Renewal Consolidation section.
You can choose a preferred date when you would like domain renewals to be processed each month, as well as the payment method that should be used for the renewals. Once both have been set, click save to start using this feature.
If you no longer want to use this option, you must change each option to Unset and then click Save. This will ensure that domains renew on their individual expiry dates once again.
